Historical Records

Vermont’s historical records are preserved in many places, including historical societies and museums, public and academic libraries, and municipal clerks’ offices. To discover what historical records might exist for a specific place, try locating a local historical society, library, or municipal clerk.

The Vermont Historical Society has a robust collection of statewide historical records and online resources and the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration holds the permanent records of state government, including some available digitally. The Vermont Green Mountain Digital Archive (GMDA), a service hub of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), is a statewide collaboration that brings together digital resources of several partner institutions through one discovery portal.

Information about historical records is just as important as the records themselves. In the spring of 2021, the VHRP conducted a survey to gauge the needs of historical records repositories and to get a sense of the state and condition of historical records in Vermont. Learn more.
