Research Guide


The Online Guide is an index to archival public records in the legal custody of the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration that were transferred by the public agency that produced or acquired the records in the course of their respective business functions and activities.  

The index may be searched by the name of the public agency (creator) and/or business function (series title). The Series ID is also the Guide ID and the index can be searched by Series ID as well.

All fields use pattern searching, meaning that partial names or words may be used. To expand results, limit search terms to one field. To limit results, enter search terms in two or more fields in the search form.

Scope: Series consists of federal acts sent to Vermont by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. Included is an act regulating the number of representatives for Vermont and Kentucky. The original letters of transmittal, signed by Jefferson, are in Manuscript Vermont State Papers, volume 24, p. 37.

Commission records related to the erection of a building for the use of the State Library and Supreme Court and other state purposes, 1915-1919.

Scope: Series consists of correspondence, minutes, bids, and contracts related to the erection of a building for the use of the state library and supreme court, and for other state purposes pursuant to Act 9 of 2015. The records primarily concern the construction of a building for the State Library and Supreme Court in 1915-1916. A commission was appointed by Governor Gates to select the site and oversee the construction. Included are letters to former Governor William Stickney (a commissioner) regarding the new state building, and records of the proceedings of the commission to provide for the "erection of a building for the use of the State Library and Supreme Court and for other state purposes".

Scope: Series consists of governors' pardons, proclamations, appointments, and executive orders. Beginning with Governor Snelling's administration in 1977, the executive records are kept with the individual governor's records.

Scope: Series consists of transfer copies of outgoing letters of various governors and / or their secretaries of civil and military affairs, and of one secretary of state (George Nichols). Included are letters from Samuel Burnham, Paul Dillingham, William P. Dillingham, Charles M. Gay, John W. Marsh, George S. Nichols, Ebenezer J. Ormsbee, John B. Page, Asahel G. Peck, Samuel E. Pingree, Fletcher D. Proctor, Redfield G. Proctor, Harry P. Stimson, Peter T. Washburn, and Alfred E. Watson. There are also four incoming letters to Governor Peck from the U.S. Department of State.

Court of Confiscations, 1778-1780.

Scope: Series consists of the proceedings of the Court of Confiscations. The court was created by the Governor and Council in March, 1778 to "assertain the particular estates to be confiscated and sold for the purpose of supplying the treasury". The court seized and sold the property of persons loyal to the British government who owned property in Vermont. The state archives has records relating to the Court of Confiscations within many different series, particularly in the Manuscript Vermont State Papers and the records of the Council of Safety. Mary Greene Nye compiled all known records of Vermont confiscations in "Sequestration, Confiscation and Sale of Estates" (State Papers of Vermont, volume VI). (The volume also contains "Sundry Charters Granted by the State of Vermont", which is part of record series A-316).
