The Online Guide is an index to archival public records in the legal custody of the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration that were transferred by the public agency that produced or acquired the records in the course of their respective business functions and activities.
The index may be searched by the name of the public agency (creator) and/or business function (series title). The Series ID is also the Guide ID and the index can be searched by Series ID as well.
All fields use pattern searching, meaning that partial names or words may be used. To expand results, limit search terms to one field. To limit results, enter search terms in two or more fields in the search form.
Scope: Series consists of finished audit reports of State agencies (filed in order of the State budget, then chronologically), 1924 - 1959 (4 cubic feet); and finished audit reports of towns (filed alphabetically, then chronologically), 1924 - 1959 (5 cubic feet).
Scope: Series consists of results of the Central Cost System for Vermont State Institutions and for Vermont State Teachers' Colleges, as prepared by the auditor of accounts.
Auditor of Accounts, Office of
Lake Champlain Bridge Commission records, 1927-1962.
Scope: Series consists of records of bidding, forms for bids, contract proposals, audit reports, mortgage and indenture records, maps, historical sketches, records of account books and other records.
Scope: The records encompass a wide range of receipts, reports, rosters, and other documents pertaining to the finances of state government, from 1809 to 1879 (bulk 1840 - 1870). The largest portion of the records comprise receipts from state and local institutions acknowledging receipt of state funds. Similarly, there are many orders for payment to various government institutions. Militia rosters and special claims made against the state also appear. There are several records related to special safety, agriculture, school, and town surplus funds.
Scope: Series consists of records related to the Acts of Legislature of 1919, specifically "no. 327. - joint resolution relating to an investigation of State expenses by the Board of Control." Included are Benjamin Gates', state auditor, copies of monthly reports to the Board of Control (1917 - 1921), Board of Control reports, copies of correspondence relative to expenditures (1920 - 1921), minutes of Budget Committee meetings and correspondence (1922).
Scope: Series consists of tax ledgers for state, town, school, and highway taxes, grand lists, state attorneys' reports and account records, treasurer's blotters, and related miscellaneous records. Includes volumes of county clerks accounts and auditors records. Includes some correspondence files of Auditor of Accounts David Anderson.
Scope: This volume includes soldiers' claims for state pay due; claims for medical expenses; claims for transportation, meals, and board provided to soldiers; recruiting expenses; and claims by towns for military expenses. See PRA-396 for source material.
Scope: Series consists of Auditor of Account's reports to the General Assembly for the years 1855, 1860 and 1862. Reports may contain a summary of expenditures and liquidations by the Auditor of Accounts; a detailed classification of the orders of the Auditor of Accounts; State Treasurer report of receipts and disbursements, resources and liabilities and statement of tax account; report of the Inspector of Finance, on the examination of the State Treasurer's accounts and the books and papers held by the Auditor of Accounts; and report of the Superintendent of the State Prison, on prison expenditures and income.
Scope: Bonus payments made to veterans of World War II or their heirs by the State of Vermont as authorized by the Vermont legislature. Cards yield name of veteran, date (i.e. 1946 March 1), appropriation number (i.e. 19.24), voucher number (i.e. 107582) and amount (i.e. $120.00). Arranged alphabetically by name of veteran. Scope: This report (271 pp.), submitted to Benjamin Gates, Auditor of Accounts, by Henry Hall, Revenue Clerk, examines the State of Vermont's World War I military account for the period 3 May 1917 - 1 August 1920. The account covers disbursements to soldiers for state pay and includes remarks, scope of work, status of account as of 1 August 1920, refunds, overpayments, conclusion and an alphabetical listing of soldiers who received the $120.00 bonus up to 1 August 1920. Listing provides name, amount paid, amount refunded, and amount received. See PRA-378 for source material.
Scope: Various claims received by the Auditor of Accounts and related correspondence, 1898 - 1904. Majority of claims relate to veterans' claims under No. 86, Acts of 1898, for providing payment of the expenses of sick soldiers of the 1st Regiment, Vermont Volunteer Infantry, Spanish-American War, 1898 - 1901. Lists of claimants and summary sheets of amounts expended, compiled by the office of the Auditor of Accounts ca.1899 are arranged by company or roughly alphabetically. Other claims relate to expenses for costs of newspaper subscriptions for the Vermont Senate, 1898; expenses of school examiners, 1898 - 1899; "noxious animal bounties," 1898 - 1899 (bulk); and claims for funeral or monument expenses for indigent veterans, 1902 (bulk). Scope: Correspondence between the Auditor of Accounts and the Attorney General regarding the interpretation of public statutes, session laws and general laws (revision) in regard to allowable expenses. Some topics include: naturalization, legal expenses/fees/fines, property issues, expenses of indigent veterans, burial or funeral expenses of veterans, railroad expenses, military expenses, liability insurance, educational expenses, liquor licensing, and expenses pertaining to governmental administration (payment of office rent, utilities, clerk hire, etc.). Includes an alphabetical subject index and numerical indices to the interpretations of public statutes, session laws and general laws (revision), all at the rear of the volume. Auditor of Accounts, Office of
Records Relating to Civil War Expenses, 1860 - 1908.
Scope: Most of the records in this collection pertain to the State of Vermont's military claims for Civil War expenses against the U.S. government. These claims were submitted in a series of 15 installments between 1866 and 1873. When received by the U.S. Auditor's office, many of the claims were returned to Vermont with a detailed accounting of and explanation for disallowed claims, some requiring explanation and others requiring further proof of expense (receipts and vouchers). The working notes of and correspondence between those involved in preparing and submitting Vermont's claims are included. This exchange between Vermont and the U.S. government went on for many years. These records provide very detailed (in fact, itemized) information on Vermont's Civil War expenditures, including costs related to defense of the northern frontier following the St. Albans Raid on 19 October 1864.
