Attorneys General


Office of Attorney General records in the State Archives can be found using the Online Guide (paper and analog formats) and VT Re•tain (digital formats). Digital records not available through VT Re•tain due to format or other public access limitations may be requested through VSARA's Reference Room. See our Archives Request Form for how to make a request. 

Records of individual Attorneys General are often incorporated into the records of Office of Attorney General divisions, programs or units. Some Attorneys General also maintain their own administrative records and/or subject files.

Please note that some Office of Attorney General records in the state archives are exempt from public inspection and copying under the Vermont Public Records Act, including those subject to attorney-client privilege pursuant to 1 V.S.A. § 317(c)(3).

*Susanne Young was appointed Attorney General by Governor Phil Scott effective July 5, 2022. Deputy Attorney General Joshua Diamond served as acting Attorney General from June 20, 2022 to July 5, 2022 following Attorney General T.J. Donovan's resignation effective June 20, 2022. 

**William Sorrell was appointed Attorney General by Governor Howard Dean effective May 1, 1997, and elected as Attorney General in the 1997 General Election. Deputy Attorney General J. Wallace Malley, Jr. served as Acting Attorney General from January 31, 1997 to May 1, 1997 following Attorney General Jeffery Amestoy's appointment as Chief Justice effective January 31, 1997.
