The State Records Center provides low-cost, secure storage for non-digital State public records that must be maintained for audit, fiscal, legal, or administrative needs, but are no longer used frequently enough to justify storing the records on-site, which is generally more expensive. For records stored in the State Records Center, both legal control and control of access to the records are retained by the agency until the records are either transferred to the State Archives or destroyed in accordance with an approved record schedule.
All records transferred into the State Records Center must have an approved record schedule.* Pursuant to 3 V.S.A. § 117, security copies of land records recorded by a county or municipality may also be stored in the State Records Center.
State Records Center services include:
*On an annual basis, the State Records Center discontinues record series that: (1) were created based on disposition orders issued prior to 2008; and (2) have been inactive for more than 24 months. Both the record series and disposition order are no longer in compliance with the State of Vermont's records management laws and requirements. Agencies that have active and continuing records and information management programs and are using record schedules issued after July 2008 are not affected.
