Vermont State Archives

State public records appraised as permanent (archival) on approved record schedules are eligible for preservation by the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration, which assumes both legal control and control of access when the records are transfer into the "State Archives." To learn about records in the State Archives, see our section on Research.

The "State Archives" is comprised of one low-cost, secure physical repository (State Archives Vaults) and one digital preservation system (VT Re•tain), both of which are available to all three branches of state government for preserving their permanent (archival) records. Transfers to the State Archives Vaults follow the same box pick up and transfer process as transfers to the State Records Center. See VT Re•tain for information on how to transfer digital records.
