Elections in the State of Vermont

Since the 18th century the Secretary of State has been assigned various election duties from attesting election results (1797) to temporarily preserving canvasses of votes for congressional elections (1802). With the adoption of the Australian Ballot (1890) the Secretary of State was given more direct responsibility for the conduct of elections and is now the state's chief election officer.

The State of Vermont held annual elections until 1870, when elections became biennial. Until 1915 elections were held in September, with terms of service running from October to October (with biennial terms, elections were held in even-numbered years). Since 1915 the biennial terms run from January to January of odd-numbered years, with elections being held in November of even-numbered years (starting in November, 1914).
