Secretary of State Jim Condos Announces Temporary Building Closures in Response to COVID-19 Outbreak

March 16 2020

Montpelier, VT – Today Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos announced the closure of Secretary of State’s office buildings to members of the public, in an effort to protect Vermonters and slow the spread of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

“The health and safety of Vermonters and our staff is my number one priority,” said Secretary Condos. “Trying times like these require responsible measures to be taken, so we have decided to close our offices for a temporary period to decrease exposure of our staff and visiting members of the public. I am confident we can maintain the same level of exceptional customer service Vermonters expect from my office, without any interruptions to our services.”

As of Monday evening, March 16th, all Secretary of State division buildings are temporarily closed to the public, including 128 State Street in Montpelier, which houses Corporations and Business Services, Elections, Municipal Assistance, Admin, and IT, the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) located at 89 Main Street, 3rd Floor in Montpelier, and the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA), located at 1078 US Route 2 in Middlesex.

In person assistance at OPR and VSARA is by appointment only. The majority of services provided by the Secretary of State’s office can be completed online. While some staff may remain on-site, others will be tele-commuting with no other service impacts to Vermonters.

“Our office’s transition to a nearly all digital environment has made it easier to ensure public health and safety without compromising on the quality of service we provide for Vermonters,” said Secretary Condos. “I want to express my thanks in advance for the patience shown by Secretary of State customers during this challenging time, and assure them our staff will be working diligently to serve your needs.”

Details on building closures, division related updates, and contact information, can be found on the Secretary of State’s website.

The Vermont Secretary of State’s office is comprised of 5 divisions: Corporations and Business Services, Elections, Municipal Assistance, the Office of Professional Regulation, and the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration. All functions of the office, including the Safe at Home Program and rule-making, will proceed uninterrupted.
