Physical Therapists > Physical Therapy Licensure Compact
As of 7/1/2024, Vermont has joined the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact. The compact is an agreement between member states to improve access to physical therapy services for the public by increasing the mobility of eligible physical therapists and physical therapy assistants to work in multiple states.
OPR is currently in the process of implementing the requirements of the compact before being ready to actively issue and accept compact privileges. This process typically takes between 8 and 12 months from the date of enactment, in some cases longer.
Once implemented, new applicants for a Vermont physical therapy or physical therapy assistant license who apply on or after July 1, 2024 will need to complete an FBI background check. Once a full Vermont PT or PTA license is granted, those new applicants will be eligible to practice under the Compact.
Please note that PTs and PTAs granted a Vermont PT license before July 1, 2024 do NOT have to complete an FBI background check and are still eligible to participate in the Compact.
