Mental Health Supervisor Registry

Act 117 (2022) requires OPR to maintain a registry of licensed mental health professionals who are available to serve as supervisors for mental health professionals in training (“Mental Health Supervisor Registry” or “Registry”). Licensees who are available to be a supervisor may request to be listed on the Mental Health Supervisor Registry. Being added to the Registry, however, is not mandatory for a licensee to provide supervision.

It is the responsibility of the supervisor and the supervisee to read and comply with the statutes and administrative rules for the supervisor’s licensed profession and for the profession in which the supervisee is seeking licensure.

Being listed on the Registry is not an indication that a licensee is qualified to be a supervisor or that OPR has approved the licensee to provide supervision. Nor does being included on the Registry indicate that OPR endorses a licensee to provide supervision. (OPR verifies supervisor qualifications AFTER supervised practice is complete and reports of supervision are received by the Office.)

If it is found at the end of supervision that the supervisor was not qualified to provide supervision, the applicant will not be able to use those hours of supervised practice for license eligibility. The applicant will then be required to repeat the supervised practice hours to meet the qualifications for licensure.

To search the registry, click here to download a list or search by name. Licensees who have added themselves to the Registry will have the supervisor specialty. Inclusion of the supervisor specialty in the Registry does not indicate that the supervisor is approved or endorsed by OPR. It indicates only that they are willing to provide supervision.

Roster Registration

Persons practicing psychotherapy, including persons engaged in supervised practice toward licensure as a licensed alcohol & drug abuse counselor, must be entered on the Roster of Psychotherapists Who Are Non-licensed and Non-certified (the “Roster”). Information on the Roster is found on the Allied Mental Health profession page. The Roster application is also found in the Allied Mental Health section of the Online Licensing System.

Mental Health Registry FAQs

What is the Mental Health Supervisor Registry?

The Registry is a tool to connect people who are looking to obtain post-graduate supervision with a supervisor who is willing to provide this supervision. Supervisors are not required to be listed on the Registry but may choose to be listed to make their willingness to provide supervision known. Participation on the Registry is completely optional. Being on the Registry is not an endorsement from the Office of Professional Regulation. It is only a registry to offer help to those who are looking for a supervisor. This registry is optional and is not something that OPR is requiring or asking you to do.

How do I find the registry?

Click here to download a list of all licensed professionals. Licensees on the Registry will have the supervisor specialty listed alongside their name on the list. You can also search for a licensee by name. If there is a supervisor specialty listed with that licensee, they are on the supervisor registry. Inclusion of the supervisor specialty does not indicate that the supervisor is approved or endorsed by OPR. It indicates only that they are willing to provide supervision.

How do I know someone is an appropriate supervisor?

The Registry is not an approval or endorsement of someone’s ability or qualifications to supervise. It is the responsibility of the licensee providing supervision to know the rules and requirements for the profession they are providing supervision too AND the responsibility of the person receiving supervision to know these rules and requirements and to ensure that they and their supervisor comply with the rules and requirements.

Do I have to put my name on the Registry to provide supervision?

No. Being on the Registry is not mandatory. You may provide supervision even if you are not listed on the Registry.

If I do not add my name to the Registry, am I still able to provide post-graduate supervision to new applicants?

Yes, you will just not appear on the Registry.

How do I know if I am qualified to provide post-graduate supervision?

Review the statutes and administrative rules for the profession you are licensed in and the profession to which you wish to provide supervision.

Once I am on the registry, can I charge for supervision?

The rules for supervision have not changed and being added to the supervisor registry does not impact or change a supervisors ability to charge. Please review the administrative rules for the profession in which you are licensed and profession to which you wish to provide supervision for the requirements applying to charging for supervision.

I am already a VT-licensed, mental health professional. How do I get added to the Mental Health Supervisor Registry?

You will need to complete the online specialty application through your licensing portal. Please follow these steps to complete the request:

  1. Log in to your online services account.
  2. Click add specialty found in the license section of the dashboard.
  3. Select the supervisor specialty, answer the questions within the registry application, and attest to meeting the requirements.
  4. Click submit at the end. There is no fee to add the specialty.

Who am I allowed to provide post-graduate supervision for?

Review the statutes and administrative rules for the profession you are licensed in and for the profession to which you wish to provide supervision.
