Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas’ Statement on President Biden Ending His Re-Election Campaign

July 22 2024

“I want to thank President Biden for his service to our country. I look forward to his continued leadership as he finishes his term as president. His selfless decision to end his re-election campaign, and put his country first, is in keeping with the kind of humility and grace he has consistently illustrated throughout his public service career.

“As we move through the final steps of the presidential nominating process, the Vermont Secretary of State stands ready as the trusted resource for all Vermonters. The formal presidential nomination for the Democratic candidate occurs on August 22. While it is unusual for a candidate to withdraw at this point in the process, the party bylaws will govern the steps forward and every state’s delegates will have a vote on the convention floor. At the conclusion of the nomination process, my office will begin its regularly scheduled preparation of ballots for the general election. We will support our municipal clerks, boards of civil authority, and election volunteers to ensure that Vermont elections remain free, fair, and accessible.”
