Montpelier, VT – Secretary of State Jim Condos announced today that State Archivist and Chief Records Officer Tanya Marshall has been appointed by Secretary of the Senate Sonceria Ann Berry to serve on the Advisory Committee on the Records of Congress.
“The preservation of public and legislative records not only ensures our history is recorded for future generations: it is a critical measure that ensures government transparency for the people. Tanya has a profound understanding of public records, particularly legislative records and their importance to society, and this appointment illustrates how invaluable her expertise is at all levels of government,” said Condos. “She is a nationally recognized leader and an excellent selection for this Committee.”
Marshall directs the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA). VSARA is a division within the Secretary of State’s office, responsible for the Statewide Records and Information Management Program and the administration of a State Records Center and State Archives for the executive, judicial and legislative branches of Vermont state government.
Created in 1990, the Committee advises Congress and the Archivist of the United States on the management and preservation of the records of Congress. Membership includes historians, political scientists, congressional archivists, and other users or caretakers of legislative records appointed by House and Senate leadership.
“The records of Congress not only serve to give us a snapshot of the political and social landscape of a point in time, they also play a crucial role enabling us to look back transparently at the recorded actions of our elected representatives,” said Marshall. “Serving on a Committee comprised of passionate individuals dedicated to the important work of preserving the records of Congress is a true honor.”
Marshall, who has worked for the State of Vermont since 2003, earned the Society of American Archivist’s Emerging Leader Award in 2013 and was the 2017 recipient of the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators Award. She was also recently reappointed by the Vermont Supreme Court to the Vermont Judiciary’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Public Access to Court Records.
