Montpelier, VT – Today Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos issued the following statement encouraging Vermonters to register to vote, or to update their voter registration information, for National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). NVRD is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating democracy, held annually on the fourth Tuesday in September.
“When we all vote, our democracy grows stronger.
The first step to becoming a civically engaged voter is registering to vote. I am proud that in Vermont we have made it easy for eligible Vermonters to get on the voter rolls.
Registering to vote online is easy using our secure website https://mvp.vermont.gov.
Through our partnership with the Department of Motor Vehicles, any Vermonter who obtains or renews a driver’s license is automatically registered to vote, as long as they are eligible and do not opt out. This process, called automatic voter registration, also helps improve the accuracy of the voter checklist, through constant voter information updates.
Vermont law even allows 17-year-olds to register, and vote in primary elections, if they will be 18 by the General Election.
As a result of these common-sense voter access policies and Vermonters’ civic nature, we are a national leader in voter registration.
Of course, we should aim for 100%, so if you’re not registered to vote yet, let National Voter Registration Day today be a reminder to register, either online or in-person through your Town or City Clerk.
If you’re already registered to vote, you can still celebrate with us. Take a moment to verify that your information is up to date at https://mvp.vermont.gov. By logging into your unique My Voter Page you can make sure all of your voter information is accurate, and update it if it isn’t. This will help keep the voter checklist up to date and ensure you don’t miss any important mailings under Vermont’s new vote by mail laws.
Remember – your vote is your voice. Make sure you’re ready to use it. Happy National Voter Registration Day!”
