Montpelier, VT – Today Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos announced the official results of the Vermont 2020 Democratic and Republican Presidential Primary Elections held on Tuesday, March 3rd.
Vote totals and winners were certified today by Secretary Condos and a designee from each of Vermont’s three major parties (Democratic, Republican and Progressive).
“I want to thank every Vermont voter who voted early or at the polls on Election Day,” said Secretary Condos. “Democracy is a muscle. Exercising our right to vote is an opportunity to strengthen that muscle, and to make our voices heard in the political process.”
197,323 voters cast ballots out of 488,787 registered voters, representing just over 40% turnout. In Vermont Presidential Primary Elections voters must declare which party ballot, Democratic or Republican, they wish to vote. 158,032 Democratic ballots were cast, and 39,291 Republican ballots. Vermont does not have a system of party registration.
The Canvass Committee, which met Tuesday, March 10th, simply certifies vote totals and winners of the Primary Elections. The process of assigning delegates to national conventions is determined by each party, and is not overseen by the Secretary of State’s office.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders received the highest number of votes in the Vermont Democratic Primary, with 79,921 votes. President Donald Trump was the top vote-getter in the Vermont Republican Primary, with 33,984 votes.
“Ensuring the integrity and accuracy of our Vermont elections is critical to our democratic process, and to voter confidence in that process,” said Secretary Condos. “I’m proud of the work my office has done, hand in hand with our Town and City Clerks, to ensure that our Vermont elections are secure and accessible.”
“I want to thank our hardworking Town and City Clerks,” continued Condos. “They often begin work before 5am on Election Day, and likely worked past midnight. I’m grateful for everything they do to ensure that the front doors to our democracy are open for Vermont voters.”
